The falconry community suffered a
great loss with the passing of longtime
falconer, former NAFA North Pacific
Director and respected zookeeper at
Seattles Woodland Park Zoo, Walter
English.
Wally contributed greatly to
not only NAFA but also Woodland Park
Zoos conservation mission as a highly
respected professional zookeeper. He was
proud to assist the zoo in its 1971 eagle
release program. In 1988, he co-authored
a scientific paper on the breeding and
management of the Common Trumpeter Swan, a species which had been difficult to breed in
captivity. As recently as 2007, he was enthusiastically involved and led zoos endangered turtles
release program in their Western Pond Turtle Recovery Project. The Woodland Park Zoo mourned
his passing by noting that Walter English dedicated his life to helping visitors and professionals
protect the earths wonderful diversity of life.
